- Personification was used to make the poem personal and attach it to the author. when he says Chocking me he is putting himself in the poem to make it his, to tell them how he feels. when the author says Pinning me down, I believe it is to show the feeling of having this weight on your chest and not being able to breathe as something pushes down on you making it difficult to move and think.
